MD squared receives Re-Certification for Physicians w/o Specialty in the Netherlands
- Claus Schaffrath in first group to obtain the Periodic Registration Certificate (PRC) for Basisartsen in The Netherlands
Out of a group of approx. 18.000 physicians w/o specialty (basisartsen) in the Netherlands without a current direct role in patient care in end there were just 129 who crossed the finish line on December 21st at the VUmc Academy in Amsterdam. Together they received the first Periodic Registration Certificates (PRCs) issued for basisartsen to maintain their active listing as physician in the Dutch BIG-Register for Healthcare Professionals after January 1st 2018.
"I am very glad - and a bit proud that I made it", commented Claus Schaffrath, owner of MD squared, during the hand-over ceremony in Amsterdam. "In the end it was the first time after my residency 18 years ago, that I had to go through several medical exams, and obviously not in the healthcare system and language I was initially trained in. So being among a group of less than 1% of all basisartsen outside of direct patient care in the Netherlands who can continue their registration as active physicians feels definitively great."
The Periodic Registration Certificate (PRC) is issued for passing three modules of the Scholing- en Toetsprogramma BIG herregistratie - basisartsen, which was offered for the first time this year. The program consists of an 4 hour exam on clinical knowledge held in May. After passing a second test on clinical reasoning was held in October, followed by a practical exam on clinical skills in December 2017. The PCR qualifies for the continuous registration as active physican in the BIG register for the period 2018-2023.
You can find the Periodic Registration Certificate HEREUpdate: In an earlier version of this news the amount of physicians outside direct patient care and due to renew their certification was estimated at 6.000. An initial statement released on January 11th by the CBIG, which supervises the BIG-Register, puts the initial estimate of physicians losing their registration per January 2018 to 18.000 basisartsen, which corresponds to 1 out of 5 of the total group of Dutch physicians.
